The club plummeted down the league (tables)

To plummet means to fall. So the football club fell down the league table and therefore lowered its position.
In German: "Der Verein stürzte die Tabelle ab."

Hi @ all,

Just as a note - you can also say "fall down the league (tables)".
BTW - This can be used figuratively as well, but it doesn't seem quite so commo, - anyone to confirm/contradict this?
(I may fall down the lanugage league tables if I'm wrong ;)
