Anschließend vertrat er die Professur für Klinische Psychologie der Universität Münster, wechselte dann als C3-Professor an die Freie Universität Berlin und nahm 1993 einen Ruf an die Technische Universität Dresden an.
Dort baute er nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung eine vollkommen neue Abteilung für Psychologie auf, die sich binnen kurzem einen hervorragenden Ruf sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der klinischen Patientenversorgung erarbeitete.
1999 wechselte er schließlich nach Basel ( Schweiz ), wo er bis zu seinem Ruf an die RUB den Lehrstuhl für Klinische Psychologie und Psychotherapie inne hatte.
