Von 1999 bis Februar 2010 war er Mitglied des Präsidiums der Freien Universität, zunächst als Erster Vizepräsident, ab 2003 als Präsident.
Im November 2009 wurde er zum Präsidenten der Universität Hamburg gewählt mit Amtsantritt im März 2010.
