follow a gravel road downhill to a bridge and after a short intermediate climb the route goes down sharply to Hochgallzein.

The descent continues along Gallzein’s rural road through a ditch which has a bridge and another short counter ascent, followed by a short flat section – ideal chance to stop-off for refreshments at Gasthof Gredler in Hof.

At 100 metres altitude lower you can call into Café Martina, before following the last part of the descent, via the steep road right back to the starting point in Buch.

Moor expert Dr Pascal von Sengbusch, who knows the area, was commissioned by NABU to supervise the renaturation.

Measure water levels, register vegetation, map ditches, make a computer model of the terrain:

based on this data Sengbusch will be able to complete the overall planning in the summer and conclude the project by 2015.

The success of the method is above all due to the fact that the growth patterns of grain crops react to archaeological structures beneath the ground and thus make the type and extent of the archaeological site visible.

In this way, the invisible remains of settlements hidden in the ground are revealed, and the form of the site can be seen, with graves, houses, ditches, and so on.

Since aerial survey was begun in 1991, around 6000 archaeological sites have been discovered from the air and documented in more than 80,000 pictures.

But the moment we went downhill it started on our side !

The lanes were icy, the snow quite heavy and on the right side in the ditch was a car every now and then.

We slowly drove with around 50 km/h without further problems.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued revised guidance for assessing the risks posed by pesticides to aquatic organisms - such as fish, amphibians, invertebrates and plants - living in ponds, ditches and streams next to fields that are treated with these substances.

The guidance document, developed by EFSA’s Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR), outlines methods to evaluate the extent to which exposure to pesticides affects populations of aquatic organisms, including aquatic plants and algae.

Webnachricht 18 Juli 2013

The name Fiss itself is hard to interpret.

It is thought that the origins of the name are either the Latin “Fossa” (= ditch) or “Fodia” (= pit or hollow), in reference to the depression in the landscape in which the scattered village is located.

In 1288, the name “Fusse” was mentioned in records for the first time.
