Jahrhunderts, wird darin ebenso erklingen wie Franz Schuberts „ Gesang der Geister über den Wassern “ nach dem Gedicht Johann Wolfgang von Goethes.
Auch das „Stabat mater“ steht für einen Gedichtanfang, das mittelalterliche „Stabat mater dolorosa“ („Es stand die Mutter schmerzerfüllt“) diente vielen Komponisten als Grundlage für Vertonungen.
Der italienische Komponist Giovanni Batista Pergolesi schuf die bekannteste Fassung des 18. Jahrhunderts, die niemand geringeres als Johann Sebastian Bach zur Motette „Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden“ (BWV 1083) auch für die protestantische Kirchenmusik adaptierte.

“Stabat mater” is the beginning of a poem too, the medieval “Stabat mater dolorosa” (“The sorrowful mother stood”), which has been set to music by numerous composers.
The best-known version from the 18th century is by the Italian composer Giovanni Batista Pergolesi and was adapted for the devotional use of Protestants by none other than Johann Sebastian Bach in his motet “Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden” (“Cancel, Highest, My Sins”, BWV 1083).
