Context The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Mar de Cortés) is a marine and coastal region populated by extraordinarily diverse and rare animal species, whose co-existence in this relatively small space once prompted the world-famous marine biologist Jacques-Yves Cousteau to call it the ‘the aquarium of the world’.
This region supports important habitats and ecosystems with unique animal and plant species, including virtually all of the earth’s whale species, such as humpbacks, greys, blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and pilot whales.

Ausgangssituation Der Golf von Kalifornien ist eine Meeres- und Küstenregion, in der außergewöhnlich viele und seltene Tierarten auf relativ kleinem Raum zusammenleben. Der weltberühmte Meeresbiologe Jacques-Yves Cousteau nannte ihn deshalb einst „das Aquarium der Welt“.
In der Region gibt es bedeutende Lebensräume und Ökosysteme mit einzigartigen Tier- und Pflanzenarten, unter anderem leben hier auch fast alle auf der Welt vorkommenden Walarten, wie Buckelwale, Grauwale, Blauwale, Finnwale, Pottwale und Grindwale.

This process first involves identifying successful pilot models of sustainable usage and biodiversity protection at local level and then replicating them throughout the entire Gulf of California.
The creation of special use zones – i.e. zones with restricted usage – helps protect and conserve biodiversity while also networking the protected areas.
www.giz.deÜber Ausbildungsangebote und durch ein verbessertes Wissensmanagement können positive Erfahrungen und Umsetzungsbeispiele für den Erhalt der Biodiversität sowohl regional als auch für andere bedeutende Meeres- und Küstenregionen Mexikos umgesetzt werden.
Erfolgreiche lokale Pilotmodelle zur nachhaltigen Nutzung und zum Schutz der Biodiversität werden zunächst identifiziert, um sie dann in einem zweiten Schritt auf die gesamte Region des Golfs von Kalifornien zu übertragen.
Die Einrichtung von Sondernutzungszonen – das heißt Zonen mit eingeschränkter Nutzung – trägt sowohl zum Schutz und zum Erhalt der Biodiversität bei als auch zur Vernetzung der Schutzgebiete.
