If further observations made by the Cassini instruments during the mission confirm the presence of cryovolcanoes on Titan, this would make it the first body in our Solar System to feature ice volcanoes.

Unlike the ‘ rocky ’ planets and moons of the inner solar system, the bodies of the outer solar system - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and their satellites ( Pluto being a special case ) – contain a much higher proportion of volatile elements.

Berlin / Cologne - Saturn ’ s moon Titan may have volcanoes.

That ’ s the result of spectrometer data taken by the NASA space probe Cassini from Saturn ’ s largest satellite.

Christophe Sotin of the University of Nantes in France and Ralf Jaumann from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) along with other scientists present their analysis of the data in tomorrow ’ s edition of scientific journal ' Nature '.

On their mission to the moon in 1969 the Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin created arguably the most famous footprints ever.

Since the time the astronauts of the Apollo 11 Mission stepped onto the surface of our satellite their footprints remain almost unchanged.

And as no breath of wind will ever be able to blow them away they will be visible forever.

Within the Saturn system, the Saturnian moon Titan is an extremely complex world in its own right and many of its characteristics make it seem almost like a small planet of the inner solar system.

With a diameter of 5150 kilometres, it is larger than the planet Mercury and the second largest satellite in the Solar System after Jupiter ’ s moon Ganymede.

Titan circles Saturn at a distance of more than one million kilometres and is mantled by dense clouds of nitrogen and hydrocarbons ( such as methane and ethane ) as well as traces of water and ammonia.

Saturn ’ s moon Titan : more a planet than a moon

The Saturnian moon Titan – the ringed planet ’ s largest satellite with a diameter of 5150 kilometres – is a highly complex body in the Solar System.

It is larger than the planet Pluto and in many ways more resembles a planet than a moon.

Today its known that the real diameter of Titan with ca. 5200 kilometer is somewhat smaller than the diameter of the Jovian moon Ganymede with ca. 5400 kilometer.

After the discovery of the Galileian moons around Jupiter Titan was the second discovery of satellites around a planet.

It has a dense atmosphere of methane and ammonia, which is responsible for an apparently larger size and for the reddish color.

Pluto / Introduction Pluto is the outermost planet of our Solar System with a mean distance from the sun of nearly six billion kilometers.

It features no rings and there seems to be only one satellite called Charon.

Pluto is the smallest planet of our Solar System and has a diameter of only 2300 kilometers.

www.planet-kerry.com

Hydrogen, in particular, combines with other light elements such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen to form a wide range of chemical compounds.

Because of the very low temperatures in this region, usually below -150º Celsius, the satellites of these planets have icy surfaces, combined in varying proportions with other volatile substances and also minerals as we see with Earth-like planets.

The spacecraft passed by Phoebe at a distance of just 2068km, providing the twelve scientific instruments on board Cassini some unique opportunities for observation.

Images of Phoebe show a satellite pitted with craters, a body whose geological formation and chemical-mineralogical composition now appear to be much more complex than previously suspected.

www.dlr.de
