In the exercise of belief, the religious takes place in physicality – and vice versa :

in the body postures of the appeal and the prayer, in the gestures of worship or in meditative states, during religious rituals in public space, processions or dancers, or when extreme experiences of suffering or rapture are expressed through the body.

s concern for deceased members of their family, with the colophons appearing to have adhered to various rules.

For the most part, it is unclear how these rules originated and which factors were decisive in allowing any deviations for individual cases, although the worship of certain texts and of certain Buddhas and Bodhisattvas certainly played a significant role here.

A similar vocabulary can be found in votive inscriptions on steles, mostly with images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, dating from the 5th century onward in Northern China.

Jahrhundert in Nordchina.

The gaze of the ancient beholder was not guided by voyeuristic lust but by the worship of the almighty power of love.

The province of Sichuan 四川 in Southwest China is traditionally considered as the cradle of religious Daoism.

In this region, where early Daoist movements emerged and the religious worship of Laozi 老子 has a long history, various groups of Daoist practitioners are still active today.

Professional priests offer their ritual services to the populace, especially in rural areas, whereas monks and nuns of the Quanzhen 全真 ( Complete Perfection ) order live in monasteries, which can be found on top of sacred mountains as well as in the middle of crowded cities.

In the 8th century there was a growing opposition to the significance attributed to the images of Christ, Mary and the saints as the bearers of miraculous characteristics.

It was said that the true worship of Christ was the worship to be found in the spirit and in the truth and not in images.

In order to have this critical doctrine accepted throughout the entire empire, Constantine V held a council in Hiereia in 754.
