For each migration project, Siemens develops an individual strategy tailored to the facility ’ s individual requirements.

" Migration cannot take place without solid, detailed and well thought-out planning, " says Ulrich Dallmeier, Head of Electrical, Measurement and Control Technology at INEOS Phenol, a company that operates the world ’ s largest phenol plant.

Skin-coloured, pastel-coloured and white lingerie undergo a phenolic yellowing test.

With this, it is tested to what extent the fabrics tend to turn yellow when in contact with phenols in the environment during transport or while being stored.

The fabric samples are wrapped in testing paper that has been primed with phenol according to the EN ISO 105 standard and then are put in the Memmert heating oven for 16 hours at +50 °C.

This entire industrial area is located in drinking water protection zone III, in the direct catchment area of three water treatment plants.

A broad range of contaminants – the main ones being volatile halogenoalkanes, petroleum hydrocarbons, BTEX, phenols, cyanide, and heavy metals – causes local soil contamination and large scale groundwater contamination in the transfer zones to water purification plants.

These limit values are guided by the Tolerable Daily Intake ( TDI ), i.e. the amount of a substance that can be consumed daily throughout a lifetime without any health risk.

The TDI value for phenol is currently 1.5 milligrams per kilogram body weight and day.

This value was established more than 40 years ago on the basis of the data available at the time.

The advantage of the sugars extracted from wood is that they do not compete with food production.

Because of its good thermoplastic properties the lignin ob- tained was used directly by the project partners in compounds for the extrusion of molded parts or as an alternative for the mineral oil-based phenol in resins and polyurethane com- pounds.

The project partners also examined various chemical and biotechnological possibilities for lignin cleavage to create basic aromatic constituents.
