Ziel dieses Hintergrundpapiers, erstellt vom Arctic Centre, September 2008 als Teil des Arctic TRANSFORM Projekts ist es, die Situation der arktischen indigenen Bevölkerung darzustellen im Zusammenhang der sich verändernden Meersumwelt.
Die Arktis ist Heimat für mehrere indigene Bevölkerungsgruppen ( sowie die Inupiat, Yup ’ ik und Aleut in Alaska, Inuit in Grönland und Kanada, Saami in Fennoscandia und Russland und Yup ’ ik, Chukchi, Even, Evenk und Nenets in Russland ).
Von der Gesamtpopulation von 4 millionen Menschen in der Arktis gehören 10 % zu diesen indigenen Bevölkerungsgruppen.
