“ In order to be able to maintain our high quality standards in the long-term, the sustainable production of all raw materials is particularly important ”, according to HACHEZ.

Fair prices, social standards, environmentally compatible and sustainable cultivation of raw materials, the strict rejection of child labour, fully recyclable packaging materials, as well as the reduction in CO² emissions, electricity and water consumption in the production process are just an excerpt from the list of measures for sustainability and environmental protection.

The opportunities that arise from calculating the product carbon footprint are illustrated by the coffee variety “ Tchibo Privat Kaffee Rarität Machare ” from Tanzania.

While high transport-related emissions might be the first thing to come to mind for a product such as this, the analysis shows that the largest source of emissions is cultivation on the farm, which contributes around 59 grams CO2-equivalent per cup of coffee or 56 percent of the total.

Surprisingly, the next-largest contribution, at around 30 percent, is made when the coffee is brewed by the consumer.

The European Food Safety Authority ( EFSA ) has published a scientific opinion on the 2009 Post-Market Environmental Monitoring ( PMEM ) report for the cultivation of genetically modified maize MON810.

The PMEM report was assessed by EFSA’s Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO Panel) which concludes that maize MON810 cultivation for the 2009 growing season had no adverse effects on human and animal health or the environment.

The GMO Panel also concluded that the outcomes of the PMEM report corroborate the findings of the previous EFSA risk assessment of maize MON810 from 2009.

In response to a long standing request from several Member States, the Commission published in July 2010 a proposal for a Regulation revising Directive 2001 / 18 / EC to provide a legal basis to Member States in order to decide on GMO cultivation on grounds other than those based on a scientific assessment of health and environmental risks performed at European level.

Thanks to this amendment Member States will be able to restrict or prohibit GMO cultivation in part or all of their territory without recourse to safeguard clauses which up to now have not been backed by EFSA.

The European Parliament adopted a first reading opinion on the proposal in July 2011.

Thomas Radetzki always had success when he initiated projects like ? Network of Blooming Landscapes ? or the ? Alliance to protect the Bees against Agricultural Engineering ?, which caused headlines all over Germany in the Autumn of 2011.

The reason: the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg had decided that honey, even if it contained only small traces of certain genetically modified pollen, could no longer be sold in the EU ? a groundbreaking decision, which will put the hurdles for the cultivation of patented designer plants in future considerably higher.
