Volker Großer, geboren 1953, studierte Montage und Fügetechnik von 1974 bis 1979 an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz.
Anschließend (1979 bis 1982) war er Aspirant an der TU Chemnitz. Seine Promotion zum Thema »Hochtemperaturlöten « beendete er 1982.
Von 1982 bis 1993 arbeitete er an der Akademie der Wissenschaften, Institut für Mechanik in Chemnitz und leitete die Forschungsgruppe »Lasermesstechnik«.
