Felix Mendelssohns Vierte Symphonie, vom Komponisten selbst als »Italienische« gekennzeichnet, stand neben der Sechsten von Anton Bruckner, dessen Musik immer wieder mit katholischer Jenseitigkeit assoziiert wird.
Neben exzellentem Musikgenuss bot der Abend indessen Gelegenheit, solche lieb gewonnenen Vorurteile von Grund auf zu hinterfragen.
