Context The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Mar de Cortés) is a marine and coastal region populated by extraordinarily diverse and rare animal species, whose co-existence in this relatively small space once prompted the world-famous marine biologist Jacques-Yves Cousteau to call it the ‘the aquarium of the world’.
This region supports important habitats and ecosystems with unique animal and plant species, including virtually all of the earth’s whale species, such as humpbacks, greys, blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales and pilot whales.
