Einige Populationen von frei lebenden Schimpansen knacken nahrhafte aber harte Nüsse, indem sie sie auf einen Stein, eine harte Wurzel oder den Ast eines Baumes („Amboss”) legen und dann mit einem Stück Holz oder Stein („Hammer”) darauf schlagen.
Diese Art des Werkzeuggebrauchs wird seit fast 30 Jahren beobachtet, doch bisher war nur wenig darüber bekannt, welche Kriterien Schimpansen bei der Auswahl eines geeigneten Hammers berücksichtigen.

Some wild populations of chimpanzees crack nutritious but hard-shelled nuts by placing them on a rock, a hard root or a tree branch (anvil) and then pounding them with a wooden club or a stone (hammer).
Though this tool using behaviour has been documented for almost 30 years, so far very little was known about chimpanzees’ ability to select the optimal hammer in terms of its physical properties and in relation to different contexts.
