Während sich Wimar Witoelar nach dem Fall Suhartos aktiv am politischen Geschehen der sich neu entwickelten Demokratie Indonesiens beteiligte, indem er Pressesprecher des Präsidenten Abdurrahman Wahid wurde, sah Peter Schiwy seine Aufgabe eher in der Entwicklung eines neuen Kommunikationskonzeptes für die ehemalige DDR.
Witoelar und Schiwy waren demnach, wie sie im Laufe der Diskussion immer wieder versicherten, überrascht und glücklich über die Umbrüche in ihren Heimatländern, wenngleich sich bei Peter Schiwy nach der ersten Euphorie auch Ängste einschlichen.
