Mate ist ein Wort aus dem Indianischen und heißt “ Kürbis ”.
Der Tee wird aber nicht aus Kürbisblättern gebraut, sondern aus den Blättern der Stechpalme, von der es in Amerika etwa 15 verschiedene Arten gibt.
In der indianischen Medizin werden die Blätter gegen Gicht, Fieber und Gelbsucht benutzt.
