Nachdem die Olympische Idee nach den Spielen von Paris und St. Louis, jeweils an den Rand der Weltausstellung gedrängt, schon fast dem Untergang geweiht war, wurde ihre durch die bis heute nicht offiziell anerkannten Zwischenspiele von Athen im Jahre 1906 neue Energie verliehen.
Für die darauf folgenden Spiele 1908 hatte Coubertin Rom als nächste Station vorgesehen, die auch 1903 offiziell ihre Kandidatur erklärte.

After the Olympic idea past the games of Paris and St. Louis each marginalised during the world exhibitions were almost doomed, it has revived by the until today not officially recognised intercalated games of Athens in 1906.
For the forthcoming games in 1908 Coubertin had destined Rome as next station that officially explained its candidature in 1903 as well.
