Sie erstrecken sich von extrem flachen Uferzonen über einige hundert Meter tiefes Wasser oberhalb der Kontinentalschelfe bis hin zur Tiefsee, auch Abyssal genannt.
Ähnlich wie auf dem Festland, wo es Berge, Täler, Ebenen, bewaldete Gebiete oder auch Wüsten gibt, finden wir auch in den Meeren eine große Vielfalt an Lebensräumen:
