Surrogate Cities Ruhr begreift die Vielzahl der Städte der Region Ruhr als eine polyzentrische Metropole und schafft ein Zusammenspiel zwischen der Stadt und ihren Bewohnern, das aus der rein musikalischen Sphäre auszubrechen scheint.
Die formlose Form der Stadt wird in der mal atemlosen, mal lyrischen Architektur der bewegten Körper und in den Rhythmen der Musik und ihren orchestralen Gesten zum Ereignis.
Die Musik von Surrogate Cities, seit ihrer Uraufführung 1994 überall auf der Welt erfolgreich aufgeführt, bezieht ihre Impulse aus Texten, Zeichnungen und Strukturen von Stadtplänen, verwendet Sounds aus Berlin und New York, aus Tokio und St. Petersburg oder trifft unvermittelt auf historisch-musikalische Bruch- und Fundstücke.
