Etwa 140 km nördlich von Luxor wird der Nil auf einer Breite von 330 m aufgestaut.
Das Dammprojekt besteht aus einem 64 Megawatt-Kraftwerk, einer Wehranlage mit sieben Wehren zur Wasserstandregulierung sowie aus zwei 170 m langen Schleusen, welche mit einer Breite von jeweils 17 m für eine reibungslose Passage des regen Schiffsverkehrs sorgen.
