Tibetisch gehört dem tibeto-burmesischen Zweig der sino-tibetischen Sprachfamilie an und ist die Alltagssprache von etwa sechs Millionen Menschen in der Tibetischen Autonomen Region ( Xizang ) und anderen zu großen Teilen kulturell tibetisch geprägten Provinzen der chinesischen Republik ( Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu ).

Darüber hinaus ist das Tibetische (in Form von verschiedenen Dialekten) die hauptsächlich verwendete Sprache in Bhutan; es wird auch von bestimmten Bevölkerungsgruppen im nördlichen Nepal, Indien (Sikkim, Kaschmir, Himachal Pradesch) sowie tibetischen Gemeinden in der Diaspora (vorwiegend in Indien, Nepal, den USA und verschiedenen europäischen Ländern) gesprochen.

Die tibetische Umgangssprache umfasst zahlreiche (über 220), heutzutage oft gegenseitig nicht verständliche Dialekte.
