Mit der Wasserrahmenrichlinie der EU ( WRRL ) werden diverse Innovationen in die europäische Wasserpolitik eingeführt, darunter auch die Anwendung ökonomischer Ansätze im Gewässerschutz.
In der Umsetzung der WRRL werden ökonomische Instrumente (z.B. kostendeckende Wasserpreise), Methoden (Kosten-Wirksamkeits-Analyse) und Prinzipien (z.B. das Verursacherprinzip) genutzt, um die Ziele der Richtline zu erreichen.
Wirtschaftliche Argumente können auch eine Rolle spielen, um Ausnahmen von den Zielen der Richtlinie (Erreichung des guten Gewässerzustands bis 2015) zu begründen.
