In accordance with the definition in the Coinage Act, the 5-franc coin was made of 25 grammes of 0.900 fine silver, the 2-franc coin contained 10 grammes, the 1-franc coin 5 grammes and the ½-franc coin 2.5 grammes (= coins whose metal content was equal to their face values = full-bodied coins).
The designation of ½ franc was taken over from the French half-franc coin, which bore the lettering "½ FRANC" or "DEMI FRANC" until 1845.
