Zwischen Großbritannien und dem Kurfürstentum Braunschweig-Lüneburg, insbesondere zwischen der Royal Society und der reformorientierten Georgia Augusta, bestand unter der Personalunion eine enge, politisch wirksame Verbindung, die auch den König selbst und einige engagierte Göttinger Professoren umfasste.
So war Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, der Gründer des Akademischen Museums, 1781 über Hannoversche Regierungskreise an den Monarchen herangetreten, um Ethnographica aus erster Hand einzuwerben.

During the time of the personal union, there was a close politically effective relation between Great Britain and the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, involving, among others, the Royal Society and the reform-oriented Georgia Augusta. This network included even the King himself as well as some dedicated Göttingen professors.
One of them was Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, the founder of the Academic Museum, who contacted the sovereign in 1781 by way of Hanoverian government circles with a request to gather some first-hand ethnographica.
