Beeindruckt von dem damals noch jungen Forschungsfeld der „Epigenetik“ schloss sie sich für ihre Diplomarbeit der Heidelberger Gruppe von Renato Paro, einem Pionier der Epigenetikforschung, an.
Nach Forschungsaufenthalten in Cambridge, England, und in Berkeley, USA, kam Erhardt Ende 2007 zusammen mit ihrem Mann, Aubry Miller, und ihrer gemeinsamen Tochter zurück nach Heidelberg.
