Zu seinen Forschungsinteressen zählen institutionelle und historische Makroökonomik, Innovations- und Wachstumsanalyse, Arbeitsmärkte und Lohnpolitik, internationaler Kapitalismusvergleich, europäische Integration, Finanzkrisen, die Geschichte ökonomischer Theorien.
Seit den frühen 1970er-Jahren widmet er einen Großteil seiner Forschungsarbeit der Regulationstheorie und der Analyse der Faktoren, welche die langfristige Entwicklung kapitalistischer Ökonomien auf institutioneller und technologischer Ebene beeinflussen.
