Die Zusammenarbeit im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung ( BMZ ) mit Mauretanien begann kurz nach der Unabhängigkeit 1960 mit dem Aufbau der staatlichen Druckerei und der nationalen Entwicklungsgesellschaft SONADER.
In den folgenden Jahren wurde die Kooperation auf wichtige Sektoren der mauretanischen Gesellschaft und Volkswirtschaft ausgedehnt .
Seit 1991 ist die GIZ mit einem eigenen Büro in der Hauptstadt Nouakchott vertreten.
