Der Verdrängungsprozeß setzt sich so lange fort, bis eine Artzusammensetzung entstanden ist, die sich im Gleichgewicht zwischen belebter und unbelebter Umwelt befindet.
Hierbei kommt es zu drastischen Veränderungen im Energiefluß durch das System.
