Um die Erkenntnisse und Ergebnisse der Weltkonferenzen zu Umwelt und Entwicklung von Rio 1992 und Johannesburg 2002 weltweit umzusetzen, wurde die UN Dekade BNE (2005-2014) von der Weltgemeinschaft eingerichtet.
BNE befindet sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen den Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) und den Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
