Juni 1973 öffnete der damalige Papst Paul VI. den zeitgenössischen Künstlern die Tore der Museen, die bereits Michelangelo und Raffael beherbergten, und weihte die neue Sammlung Moderner Religiöser Kunst ein ; sie ist der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts gewidmet und weist heute im Gesamtbestand über 8.000 Werke auf.
Für das besondere Jubiläum wird allen Museumsbesuchern eine von Francesca Boschetti herausgegebene, zweisprachige Broschüre überreicht.
