Bis 1971 arbeitete er als Postdoc an der TU München und am Max-Planck-Institut für Eiweiß- und Lederforschung, wo er mit Arbeiten am Insektenerythrocruorin und am basischen pankreatischen Trypsininhibitor das erste proteinkristallographische Labor in Deutschland aufbaute.
Von 1972 bis 2005 war er Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie in Martinsried bei München.
