After his degree as a physicist he worked at the Zentralinstitut für Optik und Spektroskopie at the GDR ’ s academy of science.
His field of work was integrated optics, dynamic holographs and new at that time, the area of semiconductor lasers.
He completed his doctorate in this field in 1990.
