During the Middle Ages the village of Caldas de Reis was the resting place of distinguishable pilgrims, such as Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England, who around year 1167 spent the night in this town.

In the late nineteenth century the town of Caldas decided to use the stones from the medieval tower of Queen Urraca to build the only Galician temple dedicated to the Archbishop of Canterbury in commemoration of his visit to the town.

The Railways helped Judendorf and Straßengel to frequent excursionists, pilgrims and other visitors.

Already in the 70's of the nineteenth century, in other words long before the first convalescence institution was constructed, it was fashionable for well-situated citizens to travel to Straßengel in order to promenade, as numerous historical sources prove.

The civilization of the “ Terramara ”, fortified villages surrounded by an embankment and a moat, had developed in the Po valley during the Bronze Age, between 1650 and 1170 BC.

Its name derives from marl ground (from the word "loam" in the Emilia dialect) with reference to the soil that was found within low hills, which were typical of the Po valley landscape in the nineteenth century.
