Sculptures such as Femme couchée qui rêve fascinated the Surrealists and Giacometti became part of their circle : suddenly works of art divorced from reality were no longer required ; rather, the Surrealists expected objects for psychological and physical use – fetishes onto which desires and aggressions can be projected.
These sculptures transmute into appliances, which posit the possibility of human action – press a lever to trigger a symbolically charged movement – a new type of art, playful and unsettling, symbolically precise and simultaneously enigmatic.
