Halloween est le 31 octobre, la veille du "All Saint's Day" ou "All Hallows" (la Toussaint). Depuis la nuit des temps, on l'associe aux esprits et aux sorcières. Les enfants fabriquent des "jack-o-lanterns" (des lanternes avec des citrouilles) et en Écosse ils s'en vont "disguising", c'est-à-dire qu'ils se déguisent et vont de maison en maison pour collecter de l'argent de poche en chantant et en récitant des poèmes. Aux USA, les enfants se déguisent le soir et ils font du porte-à-porte, un sac à la main. Quant les habitants ouvrent leur porte, les enfants crient "Trick or Treat!": on doit leur donner une sucrerie ("treat") ou bien on reçoit un gage ("trick"). De nos jours, les gages ou mauvaises farces se font rares car les enfants ne vont que dans les maisons dont l'éclairage extérieur est allumé en signe de bienvenue.
