Sebastian Biere studierte an der Universität Hamburg.
Als Regie- und Redaktionsassistent beim Norddeutschen Rundfunk lernte er die Medien nicht nur rechtlich, sondern auch praktisch kennen.
Seinen Weg zum Assessorexamen verbrachte er unter anderem im Ministerium für Inneres des Landes Brandenburg in Potsdam.

Whilst working as an assistant director and junior editor at North German Radio ( NDR ), he became familiar not only with the legal issues arising in the media but with practical matters, too.
He spent some time working at the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior in Potsdam, and as a trainee lawyer he was involved with launching a project on the legal aspects of the Internet, which attracted wide interest at the time.

Er arbeitete als Redaktionsassistent, Herausgeber und Autor an mehreren Lexika mit ( Bibellexikon, Lexikon der Alten Welt, Handbuch religionswissenschaftlicher Grundbegriffe, Der Neue Pauly, Die Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart ).
Neben seiner Haupttätigkeit, der Ausbildung von Lehrern für das Höhere Lehramt, beteiligte sich Hubert Cancik an verschiedenen Forschungsprojekten und Editionsvorhaben wie der Religionsgeschichte Deutschlands, der Sozialgeschichte der römischen Religion, die Römische Reichs- und Provinzreligion, Brückenland Anatolien;

Professor Cancik has edited and co-authored several lexica, including a bible lexicon, a lexicon of the ancient world, a handbook of fundamental terms and concepts for Religious Studies, the acclaimed Der Neue Pauly, and a lexicon of religion past and present.
Besides his principal professional activity, postgraduate teacher training, Professor Cancik has contributed to numerous research and editorial projects, such as a religious history of Germany, a social history of Roman religion, research on imperial and provincial Roman religion, and a study of Anatolia as a bridge between distinct cultures and religions.
