The establishment of four professorships – for German, French, Italian, and English language and literature – already laid the basis for both historically based and contemporary Literary Studies keeping track with the times.
From the very beginning among the most well known research professors the ETH could count on the Hegelian Friedrich Theodor Vischer (1855-1866), the later Italian Minister of Education, Francesco de Sanctis (1856-1860), or the later French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paul-Armand Challemel-Lacour (1856-1859).
This setting was preserved throughout the 20th century, with minor changes being made.
