They took a lot of computer tomographs of a moving piston engine and used them to reconstruct the engine ‘ s motion.
The 3D images show how the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, how the valves open, and how the con rod drives the crankshaft.
The researchers were able to use the fact that this motion is a periodic process: they recorded each phase of the motion again and again, which in the end gave them a lot of images that they could put together.
