The opera ‘ The Flying Dutchman ’, which celebrates a premiere in the jubilee year of the composer on 19 October 2013, is under the patronage of the Bank.
Already the tempestuous overture of the opera, which was last played in St.Gallen over forty years ago, evokes the wind lashing against the sea through which the cursed ship of the Dutchman has been laboriously sailing for centuries.
The eponymous hero is a character that is allied with the dark and demonic powers and is damned to an odyssey which can only end by death or through unconditional love.
