www.show-palace.euDargestellt werden in fantastisch-symbolischer Bildsprache die Erlebnisse einer romantischen Künstlergestalt, die am Leben scheitert, in ihrer Einsamkeit und ihrem Leid jedoch schöpferische Inspiration findet.
Die Bühnenwirksamkeit dieser Oper ergibt sich jedoch nicht aus der Handlung, sondern nur durch die sehr enge Verzahnung von Gesangs- und Sprechstimmen mit der Orchestermusik und die Verbindung dieses musikalischen Komplexes mit einer genau vorgeschriebenen Farb- und Lichtregie.
So verlangte Schönberg, dass ein Crescendo der Musik von Bühnenwind begleitet wird, der wiederum mit einem Farbcrescendo in der Bühnenbeleuchtung einhergeht:
