Um die Geräte für unterschiedliche Fragestellungen einsetzen zu können, werden sie mit unterschiedlicher wissenschaftlicher Ausstattung bestückt, z.B. mit Respirationskammern ( siehe unten ) und einem Mikroprofiler zur Bestimmung von Remineralisationsprozessen durch die benthische Lebensgemeinschaft, oder mit einem Sonarsystem sowie Einzelbildkameras ( siehe unten ) zur Erfassung beweglicher epibenthischer Organismen und ihrer Reaktion auf punktuelle Nahrungsangebote.
Andere Systeme, die normalerweise für ein ganzes Jahr ausgebracht werden, sind mit Strömungsmessern und Sinkstofffallen bestückt, um den Eintrag partikulärer Substanz in das Benthal zu erfassen.
