Am 1. Juli 2003 trat in der gesamten EU die ATEX-Richtlinie in Kraft, die eine obligatorische Vorschrift für das gesamte elektrische und mechanische Zubehör für den Einsatz in Gefahrenbereichen geworden ist.
Mögliche explosive Atmosphären, in denen Explosionsgefahr besteht, können sich durch Mischungen von Gas/Luft, Dampf/Luft, Staub/Luft und anderen explosive Kombinationen, typisch für Benzindämpfe bilden.
Bei der Verwendung von elektrischem oder mechanischem Zubehör in Bereichen mit explosiven Umgebungen muss es so geplant und gebaut werden, dass keine Zündquellen, wie Funken, heiße Oberflächen bzw. elektrische Aufladung entstehen, da es sich dabei immer um Gefahrenquellen handelt, durch die diese Mischungen entzündet werden können.

Potentially explosive atmospheres exist where there is a risk of explosion due to mixtures of gas and air, steam and air, dust and air or other explosive combinations typical of petrol vapours.
If the electrical or mechanical material must be used in areas where there is an explosive atmosphere, it must be designed and built so as not to create/ to eliminate sources of ignition such as sparks, hot surfaces or static electricity and all sources of combustion able to ignite these mixtures.
