„Dass dann auch noch eine Fehlpaarung mit Adenin gebildet wird, ist ein wesentlicher Grund für die spontane Entstehung von Tumoren“, sagt Carell, „mit jedem Atemzug erhöhen wir die Tumorgefahr um ein klitzekleines bisschen“.
Ein Einblick in die Mechanismen, mit denen FaPy-G zellulären Reparaturmechanismen entkommt, könnte zukünftig aber auch helfen, Tumore zu bekämpfen, denn die Hemmung von Reparaturprozessen kann die Effizienz und Wirksamkeit von Chemotherapeutika steigern.

Further insights into the reasons why FaPy-G often eludes the cell’s detection and correction systems could help to improve the treatment of cancer, as the inhibition of DNA repair processes in tumor cells increases their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs.
