Die Forschungsfelder am MPE reichen von der Physik und Chemie von Sternen und der Materie dazwischen, über exotische Objekte wie Neutronensterne und Schwarze Löcher, bis hin zu nahen und fernen Galaxien und der Kosmologie.
Hierfür nutzen die Wissenschaftler hauptsächlich experimentelle Methoden und beobachten den Kosmos über mehr als zwölf Größenordnungen im elektromagnetischen Spektrum.
