Dadurch gingen dort die Fresken aus dem 15. Jahrhundert verloren, d.h. die Altartafel mit der Himmelfahrt Mariä zwischen den Aposteln und die ersten beiden Episoden der Geschichten aus dem Leben von Moses und aus dem Leben Christi, die von Perugino geschaffen worden waren.
In diesem Fresko wollte Michelangelo die ruhmreiche Rückkehr Christi gemäß den Texten des Neuen Testaments ( vgl. Matthäus 24,30-31;
25,31-46;
