1991 übernahm er den Lehrstuhl für Volkswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Finanzwissenschaft, an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
Er ist Mitglied in den führenden Vereinigungen seines Faches, hat drei Bücher und zahlreiche Aufsätze verfasst und ist unter anderem Mitherausgeber der renommierten Edition der "Klassiker der Nationalökonomie".
