Die Geschichte des Walfangs im 19. Jahrhundert ist zwar kaum dokumentiert, aber immerhin ist bekannt, dass französische Walfänger in der ersten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts die Walfischbucht aufsuchten.
Als 1908 der 'moderne' Walfang an der afrikanischen Küste einsetzte, wurden Tausende Wale aller Arten getötet, nur Südkaper waren offenbar nicht dabei.
