Das südliche Ufer der Spree gehörte zu West-Berlin, die Wasserfläche war bereits Ost-Berliner Gebiet.
An der Stelle, an der die vordere Grenzmauer bis 1990 auf das Flussufer traf, richtete der private Berliner Bürger-Verein zum 10. Jahrestag des Mauerbaus 1971 den Gedenkort „ Weiße Kreuze “ ein.
