Die zu sortierende Folge wird zunächst in zwei Hälften aufgeteilt (divide), die jeweils für sich sortiert werden (conquer).
Dann werden die sortierten Hälften zu einer insgesamt sortierten Folge verschmolzen (combine) (Bild 1).
